The RevIvel Association is a local group determined to restore flow to our local river, The River Ivel. it flows north from Baldock, through Stotfold to Henlow and up to St Neots where it becomes the Great Ouse. The Ivel, as we are sure you are aware, starts as a chalk stream, and is one of only some 200 in the world. Chalk-streams represent a rare and precious environment that supports a particular ecosystem that is in danger from pollution and excessive water abstraction. RevIvel is convinced that because of Affinity Water’s excessive abstraction of groundwater from the local aquifer, the Ivel is under threat. As local people we have noticed over the years how the Ivel and its source springs have dried up and at time disappeared, sometimes for many months at a time. Feargal Sharkey has been in the news a lot recently. He was lead singer in the punk group Undertones, now better known for his efforts to restore Britain’s rivers. He is very supportive of RevIvel’s efforts.
